The Natural Cycle Of
Organic Cotton

Why Organic Certified Cotton?

Organic certification requires safe working conditions, no child labor, and fair wages for workers.

Manufacturing must protect water supplies and treat all waste water. Chlorine bleaches and chemicals commonly used in the processing of textiles are not allowed.

Approximately 104.0 million bales of cotton are grown annually on approximately 2.6% of global arable land in 61 countries. Less than 1% of all cotton production is certified organic.

One bale of cotton weighs 218.2 kilograms or 480 lbs. A typical bale can produce as many as 200 full size bed sheets.

Approximately $3 billion worth of chemicals are sprayed on conventional cotton crops worldwide, including about 10% of the world's pesticides and nearly 20% of the world's insecticides.

Nearly 1,000 farmers and workers die every day world-wide from acute pesticide poisoning and many more suffer from chronic ill health.

Pesticides and insecticides unintentionally kill at least 67 million birds annually in the U.S. alone; countless insects, fish and wildlife are equally affected.

Pesticide residue has been increasingly discovered in foods and in breast milk.

The average life expectancy of a conventional cotton farmer in India is 35 years old. If the pesticide poisoning is not the cause of death, then suicide due to high debt is.

Cotton is a notoriously thirsty crop. Just 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of cotton takes as much as 10,000-20,000 liters of water to produce, or about 2000 gallons per US pound. That is the equivalent of 1/2 bed sheet set.

Organic cotton uses 91% less water than conventional cotton.

Growing organic cotton is a holistic approach to farming that strives for a balance with nature, using methods and materials that are of low impact to the environment.

Instead of spraying herbicides, farmers hand till and weed theirs crops.

Instead of spraying pesticides, farmers practice mixed cultivation and companion planting, promoting and establishing eco-systems for the natural enemies of cotton eating plant pests.

Instead of chemical based fertilizers, farmers use crop rotation and composting to naturally maintain soil health and planting cover crops between growing seasons to replenish soil and prevent erosion.

Our commitment to environmentally, economically and socially responsible practices guarantees 100% natural, pure, lustrous, soft and strong cotton fiber, that produces the finest of bed linens that are good for you and good for the planet - just as nature intended it to be!!
